Inheriting Eco: Ecolalie in Bologna

I took part in “Ereditare Eco. Umberto Eco, l’Università di Bologna e tutti i saperi del mondo” (“Inheriting Eco: Umberto Eco, the University of Bologna, and all the world’s knowledge”), the first international conference dedicated to Umberto Eco’s intellectual legacy on the tenth anniversary of his death (University of Bologna, May 27-29, 2026, over 300 scholars and 200 papers).

As part of the conference, together with Emiliano Battistini and Francesco Giomi (with a contribution by Maurizio Bettini), I curated the musical event “Ecolalie. Umberto Eco, il suono, la musica” (“Echoes of Eco: Umberto Eco, Sound, and Music”) — an artistic exploration of Eco’s relationship with sound, in collaboration with the Bologna Conservatory and the PNRR IRACF project. This year SMC has not been organized by me (as the previous two online edition, blame COVID). It was in St. Étienne and with my colleague Valeriya Korol we presented a paper, “For LISA. Music Composition from Gravitational waves” explaining the process that went from Valeriya’s GWD data, for the LISA mission, to my piece for prepared piano. On July 28th we also had the chance to present it at LISA meeting. You can check the paper here. And the music is here.

On Nov 5, 2021, I’ve been invited to talk at the conference “Musica e Cinema. Oggetti, contesti e metodologie di indagine nella musica per film“. Unluckily, I wasn’t there physically, but at least I’ve been able to participate with a video talk, Musica e cinema: questioni semiotiche di enunciazione. A big thank to the organizing committee!

The Unreal Book Project
